What is Azure Site Recovery?
Business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) planning is an important factor for any business to keep your data safe and applications running when planned and unplanned outages occur.
Azure Site Recovery helps you with your BCDR strategy. It helps deliver business continuity by replicating your applications running on virtual machines (VMs) and physical servers if a site goes down. Workloads remain available in a secondary location if the primary site isn’t available.
It recovers workloads to the primary site once it is up and running again.
Benefits of Azure Site Recovery
Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery
Minimise downtime and get up and running again with minimal impact on your business.
Simple, automated protection and disaster recovery in the cloud
Azure Site Recovery protects your environment by automating the replication of VMs, based on policies that are set and controlled by you. It protects Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware and physical servers. You can choose to use Azure or your secondary datacentre as your recovery site. Site Recovery integrates with existing technologies including System Center and Microsoft SQL Server AlwaysOn to coordinate and manage the ongoing replication of your data.
Orchestrated disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS)
Automate service recovery when a site outage occurs at the primary datacentre to quickly restore service. Easily create disaster recovery plans that can be as simple or advanced as your business requires. The plans can be designed to include custom Windows PowerShell scripts and Azure Automation runbooks and pauses for manual interventions. Networks can be customised by mapping virtual networks between the primary and recovery sites. The disaster recovery plans can be tested without disrupting services at your primary location.
Replication and disaster recovery to Azure
Access new capabilities by replicating your workloads to Azure. Migrate applications with just a few clicks or burst to Azure temporarily to cater for a surge in demand. Use copies of workloads in Azure to run reports and analytics without affecting customers. DevTest applications with copies of live data and seamlessly put new versions into production in your datacentre.
Continuous health monitoring with Site Recovery
Monitor the state of your protected instances continuously and remotely from Azure with Site Recovery. Your virtual machines’ data and replication stays on your networks when replicating between two sites that you control. When replicating to Azure as the secondary site, your data is encrypted and data can also be encrypted when at rest.
Site Recovery can manage replication for:
- Azure VMs replicating between Azure regions
- On-premise virtual machines and physical servers replicating to Azure, or to a secondary site
